I'm actually glad though because after a quick mental review of supplies I decided what would really be good is beef and broccoli over rice.
With my last stock up I bought 2 packages of steak, but using one this way will let me save the other for another meal because the stir fry always seems to stretch further.
1.10 lb. beef ($5.38)
1 bag of broccoli (from Aldi for 69 cents)
beef and broccoli seasoning ($1)
rice (from storage)
1 beef bouillon cube (for rice)
1 beef bouillon cube (for rice)
soy sauce (using up packets from carry out)
I don't have a wok so I improvise and use my largest frying pan to stir fry the meat and veggies.
I really need to look for a way to buy the seasoning packets I like in bulk.
I just can't seem to duplicate them.
Even with what I'm estimating for the storage items this meal came in less than a one serving cost from the Chinese restaurant. In fact, I ended up with 4 large sized servings.
(Hubby will take the 4th to work with him tomorrow.)
And shock of all shocks, daughter liked this.

Hi Shara,
ReplyDeletedo you add anything to the seasoning packet? My daughters made a beef with broccoli a few weeks ago, using a seasoning packet, and it came out rather flavorless. We thought maybe another time we would add lots of garlic and red pepper flakes.
This one had red pepper flakes added. Enough that hubby commented on first bite that it was spicy.
DeleteI personally think garlic and even some onion would have been nice added, but I was aiming for something daughter would eat and slivers of onion would have been out.
Very frustrating that she is so picky. However, she knows tomorrow night she has to eat a sandwich or whatever because it is my turn to pick.
That looks so good, Shara! Beef and Broccoli is one of my favorite dishes at the Chinese restaurant. I've never tried to duplicate it at home though. I've done Sweet & Sour Chicken at home and it is easy to make. I need to try this.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this! I love that you (save) and use leftover packets from take-out, too (see, we're kindred spirits...). :) I do think this is going on our recipe queue. Have a great weekend! ~Lisa
