February's Stock Up

Next week is shaping up to be quite hectic for me.  Doctor's office called and I have a pulmonary evaluation on Monday about 2 1/2 hours away.  Tuesday I have a doctor's visit (slightly closer) only about 1 1/2 hours away.  Thursday daughter has orthodontist appointment in same town.  Friday I have to go back to town where we lived before because my sister is having surgery.  If I did the math right that (I'm tired tonight) that is four days on the road.  When we had two cars I would have simply stayed with family (lives a lot closer) for a few of those nights, but I will have to be back each evening to pick up hubby from work.

When hubby told me he was going to town today (an hour away for a smaller town) I jumped at the chance to go with him and go ahead and get groceries. This town only has one store -- a Foodlion -- so there isn't much competition, but the selection is still better than our small store here.  I went ahead and did a bit of a stock-up for the month.  I'm hoping to only have to add a few odds and ends and sales as the month goes on.

large canister of raisins (best unit price)
2 liters of seltzer water (store brand)
3 boxes of whole wheat  pasta (on sale)
2 bags of pumpkin spice coffee (reduced $3.49 each)
2 jars kosher dill strips (on sale)
1 box Quaker Quick Barley
Olive Oil Mayo
Lite Pancake Syrup (store brand)
Cheerios (store brand)
Italian Bread Crumbs (store brand)
A-1 Steak Sauce
2 boxes multigrain crackers (on sale)
5 lbs of white cornmeal (fine ground)
2 lbs of yellow corn meal (medium ground)
1 bag of Craisins
2 cans of tuna (store brand)
Mint Cookies (for daughter for treat)
1 package whole wheat tortillas
1 package pitas
1 package sandwich rounds
1 package English muffins
1 loaf of bread
1 bag of whole wheat egg noodles
1 package of sandwich ham (on sale)
1 package of Canadian bacon
2 packages of fat free turkey franks (on sale)
1 pork loin roast
1 package of beef for stewing (on sale)
1 package extra lean ground beef (on sale)
5 large Italian turkey sausages
4 packages of boneless skinless chicken thighs (reduced/organic)
1 package of boneless chicken breast (reduced/organic)
5 lbs red potatoes (on sale)
2 packages of tofu (on sale)
2 large bags of roasted peanuts (on sale)
5 lbs of sweet onions (on sale)
3 shallots
2 bags of salad greens (mixed)
2 English cucumbers (on sale)
2 lbs of green beans
1 cabbage
5 lbs of carrots
1 large turnip
celery
1 lemon
1 lime
4 pink lady apples
4 tangerines
a bunch of bananas
sliced portabellas
1 red bell pepper
2 green bell pepper
large jar of minced garlic
4 1/2 dozen eggs
Sharp cheddar
shredded mozarella
1 bag of string cheese
1 bag of frozen chicken patties
1 container low fat ricotta cheese
2 bags Boca meatless crumbles
Swiss cheese slices (on sale)
pepper jack cheese slices (on sale)
4 pack of egg rolls
Brussels Sprouts (frozen)
California blend veggies (frozen on sale)
Broccoli (frozen on sale)
2 bags of speckled butter beans (frozen)
1 bag of baby lima beans
1 bag of stir fry veggies (frozen on sale)
4 containers of organic soy milk (store brand)

I spent $285. 94.  On sale items I saved $25.51.
On marked down items I saved an additional $15.35.

Not too bad all in all...especially considering that this store is not known for its lower prices.

I'm hoping that other than fresh items this will last us most of the month.
I ended up with 8 meals worth of chicken (planning for leftovers for lunch for hubby).
In addition to the other meats I purchased, I have two meals of fish on hand, several meals of turkey burgers, 1 meal of turkey mignon, a whole turkey, a spiral sliced ham, dried beans, ravioli, stuffed shells and a few other odds and ends.

I know I blew my plan to only bake breads, but this week we'll be on the road so much that I either have to pack food or do take out.  It will be nice to just grab the stuff to make sandwiches and go.  I'm sure it is better than eating out that many meals for both the health and the pocket book.

  1. Looks like you are well stocked for the month, Shara. I agree with you, buying bread is better than eating out, and I would not worry about it. We can't always do everything we want to do, but if we are doing it the majority of the time I think we are doing good. :)

    1. Thanks Belinda. It took me a long time to learn that a certain amount of flexibility is required to get through life.

  2. It looks like you did very well. And I totally agree with both you and Belinda, that buying the bread was the smarter choice.

As I was reading your list of what you bought, I asked myself, "why is that we enjoy reading each other's grocery lists or seeing photos of each other's pantries?"

Good luck getting through the week. That's a lot of traveling!

    1. Lili, thanks. I have this theory that food (or the act of eating it if you prefer) is a universal binder that brings people together.

  3. I figure even if I buy a convenience food, it's always cheaper than eating out. Do you have a good book on tape for all of your travel this week?
