We picked up four things that were not grocery related.
1. one of my medicines ($162 ugh! thank goodness that is three months worth, but that is with excellent medical insurance)
2. 14 ounces of worsted cotton yarn -- This is for washcloths for my bathroom. We're in desperate need of some.
3. 2 pieces of craft felt
4. A 2.5 quart casserole dish. I had been looking at them for a while and I was able to get $5 off one today. Yay!
It also has the plastic travel lid.
On the grocery front things are going to be changing some here. The doctor is putting me on a low carb diet -- similar to Atkins, but not quite because of fat content issues. I'm having to phase out some things first and then phase in some new things. I'm having to do a lot of label reading, buying different products and in general tweaking things. The goal is a gradual reduction of the carbs and fat and an increase in the protein consumed. Right now I'm in the easy part...lol.
2 soy milks for hubby
1 almond milk unsweetened for me
1 coffee creamer (sugar free and fat free)
3 lbs of bananas (don't have to give up yet)
2 packages of whole grain hot dog buns
2 packages of lite turkey franks (2% fat)
3 salsa seasoning packages (for canning salsa)
3 dill pickle seasoning packages (for canning)
8 boxes of jar lids (for canning)
2 lbs of Mexican cheese
large tub of Greek yogurt fat free
fat free sour cream
cinnamon margarine for daughter (2 tubs)
celery
onions
10 lbs red potatoes
18 count eggs
2 bags of cornmeal (had used up last)
2 lbs brown rice
2 lbs navy beans
3 packages RF cheese
3 water bottles (non disposable for traveling)
2 cans green chilies
whole grain English muffins
whole grain pitas
While that looks like a lot, it is kind of deceptive. A couple lbs of potatoes, most of the celery and onion will all go into canned beef stew. I also want to can just some "plain" potatoes. The navy beans and chilies will become white chili to be canned as well. Obviously the pickles and salsa are long term too. However, the canned items will be split between two households with some going to the parents to be. My son is a wonderful person, but not a cook. I'm hoping having some heat and serve meals on hand will help both of them out.

Great idea, Shara, to provide a few heat and eat things for your son and his wife. I am sure that they will appreciate it immensely. Good luck with reducing your carb intake. I think doing it slowly will make it a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteLili, I sure hope that reducing it slowly will make it easier. By the summer I'm supposed to be on protein shakes for a while. Joy, joy! LOL
DeleteI think it will. Your taste buds will adapt over time to appreciating other foods, and you'll be able to find substitutes that you enjoy as much or almost as much. It will be a challenge at times, though. But you are a strong and resilient woman!
DeleteThanks Lili. I have a long way to go, but I'm optimistic and motivated -- so I hope those two things and just plain stubbornness will see me through.
DeleteYou're such a good mother-in-law, Shara! My husband has us on a health regime at the moment. Walked ten miles today. Wouldn't it be nice if we could eat whatever we wanted? Hope the new diet works out for you!
ReplyDeleteWow, don't think I would last 10 miles...lol. It would be so great to be able to eat what we wanted, but guess it just isn't meant to be.
DeleteDid you already mention in a different post that you also are becoming a grandmama? Congrats and blessings to the happy couple. And best wishes on the new diet. ~Lisa :)
ReplyDeleteI did. Fortunately she has had such an easy pregnancy there has been nothing to talk about that.
DeleteNow we're just playing the waiting game.
